Remediation and Restoration of Contaminated ecosystems

Biological remediation and reclamation of land and water bodies contaminated with toxic hydrocarbons is a well-documented process. Though the science of the process is established and there have been several successful case studies to indicate the efficacy and economic advantage of it over the conventional waste treatment technologies, biological approaches for remediation of environment contaminated with toxic hydrocarbons is still a major challenge.

One of the major hindrances is the vast array of chemicals that constitutes petroleum hydrocarbons as well its association of other toxic moieties, including heavy metals. Thus, despite best efforts, a complete holistic solution for reclamation and restoration of land contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, particularly the persistent ringed PAH compounds and heavy metals, is still a major challenge.

To counter the present lacunas, BT Technologies have conceptualized, developed and is now implementing an integrated concept of Phyto-assisted Land conditioning and Microbial Augmentation Technology (PALMAT™) that provides an innovative solution for management, restoration and reclamation of hydrocarbon contaminates wastes and wastelands.

PALMAT© integrates the microbial waste remediation concepts developed by the Govt of India’s CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology. The developed technology is implemented through a customized site-specific protocol that includes stimulation of natural microflora as well as addition of specialized microbial strains with physical and structural manipulation. The process is supplemented with a final phyto-assisted polishing for removal of residual contaminants and heavy metals, and restoration of the original microflora in the reclaimed land.

The region of northeast India is one of the most ecologically sensitive zones of the country. It is also bestowed with fossil energy resources of coal, oil and natural gas. In fact the first oil well as well as the first oil refinery of the country came up in this region way back in 1900s. Since then there have been exploration and production of these fossil based energy resources in this region. The dependence of fossil based energy has also gone up significantly that have also lead to several environmental issues.

Considering the pristine landscape with rich biodiversity of this region, the meeting of the energy demand should be perused after considering all the necessary environmental regulations. Keeping the environmental considerations at the forefront, B T Tech have brought in a team of experts who have in depth knowledge of the region to carry forward environmental risk assessment studies.

Resource Assessment and bio-based economy

Bio-based economy is an emerging concept. It brings in the applications of biotechnological innovations in the aspects of energy, nutrition, specialty products and also sustainable environmental management, with its role in influencing the economy. In many countries across the globe the role of bio-based economy has taken a center stage for ensuring sustainability. This is particularly of concern while providing access to clean energy in the region of northeast India that ranks lowest in per-capita energy consumption. This is despite the fact that northeast region is bestowed with not only the conventional resources of energy, but with the sustainable alternatives of bio based resources. The biomass is one of the biggest assets of this region with an additional advantage of the diversity owing to its geo-climatic location. Availability of several bio-energy crops including species of bamboo, medicinal plants with pharmaceutical and nutritional properties can be major feed-stocks for future bio-refineries leading to a major shift towards a sustainable bio based economy.

Innotech Interventions would thus like to play an active role to promote the concept and integrate resources for forging a link with the advances in technology to its implementation so that there is a clear transition towards a bio-based economy in the region. For implementing the same B T Tech would like to :

  1. Assist stakeholders to adapt, adopt and implement new and optimized sustainable agro and forest based bio-economy projects in Northeastern region of India.
  2. Techno feasibility assessment studies and documentation of inventories for biomass and bio-waste resources that have specific industrial applications for developing bio based energy and products in the region
  3. Establishing network and linkages between universities, Institute and Industry of the region with for translational research and implementation of technologies
  4. Identification of gaps and challenges of the existing programs through a series of stakeholder meetings, twining workshops and skill development programs for expanding the role of bio-economy in a sustainable future.
